Expanding the narrative on gun violence

The conversation on gun violence has become polarized and too often focused on mass shootings, while everyday gun violence affecting our communities — including domestic violence, suicide and community violence — rarely get the attention they deserve.

In collaboration with the Hope and Heal Fund, BMSG is working to better understand the narrative on gun violence in California and consider how we can widen the frame to include more than mass shootings. We also aim to highlight the community-based solutions that are already working across the state.

Expanding the narrative will connect people to the issue of gun violence in ways that demonstrate how we can tackle this epidemic and work together to solve it, rather than leaving people feeling helpless and, therefore, unwilling to engage and act. This project will develop powerful messages that resonate and identify key messengers who are best suited to deliver those messages.
